On receipt printer

One thing that was aggravating about working for Domino's was the receipt printer or, more accurately, both the order printer and the credit card printer. We didn't give out receipts in the normal sense. You had to peel off the sticky label that comes attached to each box. The credit cards were often a hassle. The paper would run out. Or it'd stick for some reason so it came out printed all weird. The worst part was that for many years, the ink was extremely light, so it was difficult to read even in good light, and when drunk customers tried to sign it at night with their front porch lights broken (most were for some reason), they'd complain and moan about it. I think they should fix their broken porch lights, but I kept my mouth shut.

On industrial equipment

I remember many years ago working for the Alton Box Board Company. They got bought out by Smurfit and I don't know what the company is called today or whether they're even still making paperboard there at all, or anything. It was full of industrial equipment. I started out on the loading dock, and would have been happy to stay there, but soon was assigned to machine number 3, which wasn't the worst but wasn't the best either. I had to climb up under those huge rollers while they were spinning away. Thank God I never stood up. My hard hat wouldn't have done me much good. I wonder if that would even be legal today, or considered too dangerous. Sometimes when I look back I can hardly believe I did it, yet it was taken for granted.

On motorcycle accident attorney

One piece of news in the past few years seemed hard to believe -- that was the news Hunter S. Thompson killed himself. I remember first reading HELL'S ANGELS in junior high study hall so many years ago, and we passed around the section about how they earned colors by having oral sex with menstruating women. That grossed out even the toughest hood I knew. And reading FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and FEAR AND LOATHING ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL were such terrific experiences. I can understand that after he wrecked his motorcycle at the end of the Hells Angels book that he'd need a motorcycle accident attorney, and that he'd need an attorney after many of the things he allegedly did, some of which he wrote about and probably others he didn't. But he had a career and drugs and a farm and so it's hard to believe he'd want to give all that up.

On finger pulse oximeter

I hate to think about it, but two years ago at this time I had a case of pneumonia. I was sick as soon as I got home from Asia at the end of January, and stayed sick, though of course I kept going to work. By early March I was coughing really badly and didn't seem to be getting any better, so I finally gave up and went to the doctor. They took x-rays and also put something over my finger which may have been a finger pulse oximeter, because somehow it measured the amount of oxygen in my blood, and I didn't have as much as I was supposed to. But when I returned after taking the antibiotic, although I was still coughing, they said I had no more infection and my blood had enough oxygen.

On procerin reviews

Another book I read recently is on dividend investing by the editor of Morningstar's DividendReview. It was good in some respects, since I agree people should invest for dividends, but surprising in others. I mean, you'd expect the editor of a Morningstar newsletter to understand the value of not analyzing single securities, but to believe in diversification. But he doesn't. He dismisses mutual funds and exchange traded funds right off the bat as though they were procerin reviews, not an important way for ordinary investors to gain safety through diversification. He does not agree with Bernstein's thesis that investors get ahead because of their asset allocation not by picking winning individual stocks or timing the market.

On grow muscle

Although you may not believe that it's necessary for you to grow muscle to be healthy because you don't want to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime (and certainly not as he looks now - gross), muscle loss is a prime signal of aging. It's called sarcopenia officially. Men and women both just kind of waste away as the years go by. That's why you rarely see anybody elderly who looks as though they'd be strong even if they weren't frail. They're sagging because their muscles are going. I'd rather be more like Jack LaLanne, towing barges for my 70th birthday. No, I don't believe I could do that and have no reason to, but I do plan to stay active including body weight exercises.

On joint supplements

I for one know that I plan to never wind up as my mother did a few years back, getting knee replacement surgery. Although I'd rather be operated on my knees than my stomach or heart or brain, it still seems agonizing. And she had a lot of trouble recovering, since she couldn't get around well. I can hardly imagine lying in bed. I'd have to be with my family, but it'd be agony to be around them and be weaker than them and need their help in everything even going to the bathroom. Therefore, I advise taking joint supplements if you can if you're feeling any kind of knee or ankle or shoulder or hip pain. You don't want to go through that kind of surgery either, I'm sure.

On testosterone booster

Ah, now we come to something that's extremely important to all men, even young guys who probably think they have all they need. They may now, probably do, but they should also be aware that age and bad health habits will grind this all-important substance and hormone down in their bodies, and they'll feel a lot worse as a result. Every man needs or wants a testosterone booster. I think even young men would benefit from this, though they assume they have all they need. When you're low on it, then nothing else in your life is the same. You can't enjoy it as much, no matter what you do. It's why you work so hard for love and money. It helps you to enjoy your success or to work hard for more success if you need to. It's what drives us.
