Bird flu disaster looming in Indonesia

For those of you who just assume that we've just go to solve the bird flu problem any day now, here's a link to a story summarizing the state of the virus in Indonesia.

It's spreading.

It's killing more Indonesians this year than people in any other country.

Unlike Thailand and Vietnam, the Indonesian central government does not have enough control over its territory to enforce orders to cull sick chickens or to force local government to cooperate in disease control efforts.

Indonesia probably has a pretty big army, but it's not going to "invade" all 17,000 islands!

Of course it's natural that the central government of Indonesia is now preoccupied with the problems from the recent earthquake.

But if they don't get bird flu under control, people will soon forget about the earthquake.

The earthquake affected one small part of the large achepelago.

Yet the entire country depends on chickens for protein and cash.

What will they do when chickens start dying in the tens of millions?

And if that many chickens catch bird flu, it's also going to infect many more people, most of them children.

How many Indonesian children will have to die before they wake up to the danger?

And that's assuming the virus does NOT mutate to a contagious strain.
