Fighting bird flu in Thailand
Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra is calling on everybody who raises chickens in the kingdom to register them with authorities.
The major poultry farms in that country has protected their birds from infection, but it is now endemic in back yard chickens that run loose in the traditional way.
It's apparent that average Thai chicken farmers are no more anxious to have their entire flocks culled than are Indonesia. But it's apparent the Thai government is more concerned and attempting to crack down.
Thailand in general is a pretty laissez faire country -- more libertarian than almost any other country I know of, despite or perhaps maybe because of, still being a real kingdom.
(There is an elected Prime Minister and a law making body of elected representatives, and they handle the basic government functions. However, the king is still considered the real head of the country. He doesn't rule in an autocratic way but no Thai goes against his authority.)
Bird flu seemed to have disappeared from Thailand late last year, so its reappearance in the province of Phichit is discouraging.
