The Secret Life of Germs review

The Secret Life of Germs: Observations and Lessons from a Microbe Hunter by Philip M. Tierno Jr. Ph.D is a terrific book to introduce you to . . . germs.

Yes, bacteria, viruses and other microscopic creatures that occupy our world.

Reading this book reminded me that although various bacteria and microbes certainly do cause us health problems, we can't live without them. We need bacteria to keep oxygen in our air, decompose dead plants and animals and even to digest our food.

It's possible that the mitochondria in our cells and which supply our bodies with necessary energy are captured bacteria. It's possible that from their point of view, these bacteria consider us to exist for them!

He addresses germs from many different aspects. Of course he devotes a lot of time to infectious diseases. And through the book he provides a lot of Protective Strategies. That is, things you can do to protect you from germs.

Number One is wash your hands often and thoroughly.

He explained antibiotics and bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

He gives clear explanations about how germs maintain or don't maintain a balance. He explains how the balance of germs in and on our bodies determines our health.

Microbes must compete for space. So long as certain germs are held in check by other microbes, we stay healthy. This is what happens for most of us -- even though most people have dangerous forms of staph on their skin. It's not dangerous until it somehow gains the upper competitive hand over other microbes on our skin.

He explains this much more clearly than I can!

The final chapter about the future of controlling infectious diseases is a great wrap up. It's also a good dose of optimism. If you read too many books about emerging diseases you can begin to think we're all doomed.

He is an expert -- he helped determine the cause of toxic shock syndrome.

For a great introduction to microbes and germs from A to Z, with particularly emphasis on how to protect yourself from infectious diseases, I highly recommend this book.
